The following was posted previously on What About Watermelon, but it’s a good question and a good summary of the many reasons why watermelon is so awesome, so I’m posting it again. Enjoy.
DAWN C. OF LAGRANGE, GEORGIA, ASKS: What are the five key selling points of watermelon?
That’s a good question, Dawn. I have my own opinions on those five selling points, each of which includes the word “awesome,” but I relayed your question to the real watermelon marketing experts at the National Watermelon Promotion Board, and below is what they had to say. I’ve added the word “awesome” wherever I felt it was needed.
1. HEART HEALTHY – The (awesome) amino acid citrulline in watermelon is important for optimal heart health and blood pressure.
2. MULTIVITAMIN – Did you know that a two-cup serving of (awesome) watermelon is an excellent source of vitamins A and C. Watermelons also contains vitamin B6 (6%), potassium (8%), fiber (4%), and the (awesome) antioxidant lycopene. It is 92% water.
3. BEST VALUE IN THE PRODUCE AISLE – A whole (awesome) watermelon can feed up to 30 people, whether it’s in (awesome) cubes, or (awesome) slices or used in one of our various (awesome) watermelon recipes at breakfast, lunch or dinner (or happy hour).
4. GREAT FOR WEIGHT LOSS – We like to say, “Spoil your appetite with a slice of (awesome) watermelon, because at 92% water, watermelon is filling and satiating.”
5. VERSATILITY IS KEY – Whether it’s for cooling off during a hot summer’s day picnic or rehydrating after a fun, long day of (awesome) snowboarding, watermelon is a healthy, refreshing treat that is available all year round! Pack it in your kid’s school lunchbox or carry a bag of (awesome) chunks to the office. Watermelon is healthy and delicious. Every day! (Awesome!)
