Every time I order something “a la mode,” it comes with a few scoops of ice cream, either on the side or piled high on top. Based on that, I’m assuming “a la mode” is French for “awesome” or “delicious.” Or “awesomely delicious.” Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s it.
Today’s recipe is Watermelon Pie A La Mode (or “Awesomely Delicious Watermelon Pie”), and it’s basically a wedge of watermelon cut to look like a slice of pie and served with a scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt. The recipe below calls for vanilla frozen yogurt, but according to the official “a la mode” rules, you should feel free to use whatever flavor of ice cream or frozen yogurt you’d like.
I couldn’t find a good picture of the pie (you can see a small picture if you click on the recipe name below), so I drew my own picture. As always, please refrain from wisecracks about my third-grade art skills.
Watermelon Pie A La Mode

6 slices (1/2 inch thick) pie-wedge shaped slices of pound cake
6 wedges (3 inch thick) wedges of seedless watermelon the same size as the cake slices
6 scoops vanilla flavored frozen yogurt
1 cup strawberry syrup
DIRECTIONS
Place the cake slices on 6 dessert plates. Top each cake slice with a watermelon slice. Place a scoop of the frozen yogurt on top of each “pie” slice and drizzle the syrup over the top.
