ASK THE EXPERTS: FINDING WATERMELON IN THE OFF SEASON

MARK A. OF HELENA, MONTANA ASKS: My wife and I eat watermelon as an integral part of our diet. In season, here in Montana, we eat one 10-15-pound seedless melon each week! We love it. However, the season is short. I would like to extend our season and have watermelon in our home year round. Could you please advise as to how, from whom, we could have melons shipped to us so we can continue our love affair with this wonderful part of our diet.

Good question, Mark. As a fellow watermelon lover, I sympathize with you.

My best advice (and it does work from time to time) is to talk to your store’s produce manager and let him know that if the store had watermelon for sale that you and many other customers would buy it! He can take the request up to their store’s produce suppliers and find an importer who will ship to your area. There are many watermelons coming into the U.S. from Mexico and Central America during the winter months. These watermelons are just as sweet, juicy and tasty as they are in the summer months!

Unfortunately there is no existing watermelon ordering system online. Watermelon is just too heavy to ship individually, but perhaps you have a business idea waiting to happen!

Hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out.

Sincerely,

The Watermelon Guy

  • You could also grow your own watermelon. Without having to ship them, you can extend the season quite a bit. And you can freeze watermelon to eat later. It won’t turn out quite like fresh watermelon, it will be more like a watermelon slush if you thaw it out, or you could slice it up before you freeze it and eat the frozen slices. Check out this article about growing watermelon.

  • Hello.
I’m writing from Italy, we have watermelons and most Italians love them. The only problem is that our supermarkets sell them during the summer months(may-sept). I’d love to be able to purchase watermelons during winter but our stores only sell ‘seasonal fruit and vegetables ‘ (well that is what they tell me anyway whenever I’ve tried to ask. So you guys who can buy it all year round please think of yourselves as lucky !
