Everyone knows who Gallagher is, right? He’s the shaggy- haired guy who created a stand-up comedy routine in the ‘80s centered around smashing watermelons to bits using his signature Sledge-O-Matic. Even as a child, I always wondered: Was his destruction of poor, innocent watermelons good for the watermelon industry or bad? I was never sure, but he did always make me hungry for watermelon, so I guess that sort of answers that question.
To be fair, Gallagher used the Sledge-O-Matic to wreak destruction on plenty of other food items too. Cottage cheese, gallons of milk, hamburgers. None fared too well, but it was always the watermelon that bore the brunt of his frustrations. I mean, what sort of emotionally scarring childhood experience did this man have with a watermelon that caused him to lash out so dramatically years later? I’ll bet Freud would have some pretty cool theories.
Anyhow, I’ll admit that I found his routines fascinating and funny and that this month’s poll question is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I’d like to know what you think:
Gallagher and his Sledge-O-Matic: Crime against watermelon or all in good fun?
Sound off with a vote on the right and with a comment below. And for those of you with strong stomachs who don’t mind a little gore, here’s a video of the G-Man massacring a few watermelons. I started to watch it, but I couldn’t get past the first 60 seconds.
