You know, if you had asked me when I was just a young ‘un back in 1984 what the year 2014 would look like, I would have imagined a world with flying cars and jet packs and tiny supercomputers that people carried around with them in their pockets. Only one of those predictions came true, and unfortunately it’s not the flying cars. (Maybe next year.)
Until the automotive industry improves itself by taking to the friendly skies, we’ll have to improve ourselves with a few New Year’s resolutions. I’ll discuss my watermelon-related resolution in an entry later this month. For now, let’s talk about the most common New Year’s resolution – losing weight. Or “eating healthier and exercising more” – call it whatever you want.
For reasons we’ve talked about in the past (here and here), watermelon is a great addition to any healthy diet or fitness plan. Here’s what nutritionist and What About Watermelon expert panelist Elizabeth Somer had to say about watermelon:
“Watermelon is loaded with antioxidant-rich vitamins such as vitamins A and C, phytonutrients such as lycopene, and is a source of arginine and citrulline – amino acids that maintain healthy blood vessels. Water is particularly important for your energy level, and watermelon is 92% water, so it is a great way to help meet your fluid needs, while enjoying a sweet treat.”
Speaking of water, if you’re hitting the gym to lose some weight, you’re probably going to get thirsty, which leads us to this month’s prize –watermelon-flavored premium essence water. The water is described as “pure spring water with a splash of watermelon flavor.” It’s made with natural flavors, without preservatives or artificial ingredients. Best of all, it’s got zero calories, no sugar and no diet sweeteners.
You can get some for yourself on Amazon, but I picked up a 12-pack of watermelon water to give away to one commenter chosen at random from all the comments left on the blog this month. To get the conversation started, leave a comment with your answer to this question:
I am going to spend more time taking care of myself and my family.
I have to say technology has helped me a lot with schooling, I can study on my laptop and get a lot of work done on it but I very much dislike the antisocial behavior cell phones have caused! No one talks anymore and its sad :/ and I decided not make a new years’s resolution because I feel like they just don’t work. However, I have set goals for myself that I do intend to follow such as passing all my college courses and being a happier person 🙂
My goal for 2014 is to complete my Associates Degree.
Watermelon Water sounds yummy.
Love your site!!
My resolution is actually to drink more water! I didn’t realize how dehydrated I am until a makeup counter consultant noticed in my face. I don’t drink anything at all during the day, only during meals, I don’t ever think about it and it does make sense because I can tell a difference in other ways besides my skin. Hope it helps!
My goal for 2014 is to eat as much Watermelon as possible, in fact so far I blend my watermelons and drink them, at the moment I’m looking to eat at least 1 Watermelon per week!
Congrats to Donna on being the winner of this month’s prize and thanks to everyone for leaving comments!
